BSc (HONS) Degree In Agricultural Engineering With Specialisations In Mechanisation Or Irrigation

About The Programme

Agricultural engineering deals with the efficient and sustainable production of food and fiber and conservation of the environment by applying knowledge of natural and engineering sciences to design and develop processes and systems that influence or control the utilization od agricultural materials for the benefit of society. The BSc Hons in Agricultural Engineering is a 5 year full-time programme with specialisation in either mechanisation or irrigation.

  1. Design and manage irrigation development projects at the national, regional and international scale
  2. Apply relevant engineering skills to design machinery relevant to agriculture
  3. Develop new technology that is applicable to agriculture to improve food security.
  4. Integrate technical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills to resolve developmental challenges facing the nation and region.

Careers

Graduates of the BSc Agricultural Engineering programme have diverse employment opportunities, which among others include Irrigation, Agri-foods processing and manufacturing industries; Agri-equipment and machinery manufacturers; environmental consulting firms, Government departments; Agricultural Input Supply Services, Municipalities, as well as self-employment.

Work placements/international opportunities

Students enrolled in this programme shall undertake at least 8 months of supervised industrial attachment. Industrial attachment can be conducted in laboratories, fieldwork, workshops and or factories.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the BSc Agricultural Engineering Honours programme will be accepted provided they satisfy the entry requirements prescribed under the General Regulations and the following entry requirements:

Normal Entry

Two General Certificate Examinations Advanced Level passes in Mathematics and/ or Physics PLUS ANY ONE of the following: Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Geography, Engineering Drawing, Technical Drawing, Computer Studies, Agriculture.

Special Entry

A pass with merit or better in equivalent qualifications such as Diploma in any one of the following: Agriculture, Irrigation, Mechanical, Civil, Automotive or Agricultural engineering.

Mature Entry

Persons who are at least 25 years of age for males and 23 years for females on the first day of the academic year in which admission is sought and who are not eligible for entry under the Normal or Special Entry Regulations may apply for Mature Entry provided that:

Applicants must have passed at least five approved "O" level subjects normally including Mathematics and English language (or equivalents) and must have demonstrated potential suitability for University studies by virtue of their attainments and/or relevant work experience

Applicants should have completed their full-time School or College education at least five years before the start of the academic year in which submission is sought.

Applicants who wish to be considered under the Mature Entry provisions may be required to attend interviews and/or special tests at the University designated to assess their command of the English Language, numerate and reasoning ability and general suitability for admission to the Bachelor's degree studies

Applicants who have previously attended Mature Entry tests and/or interviews without success will not be considered for admission under this form of entry unless in the intervening period they have acquired additional qualifications and/or experience
