environment, including climate change impacts. Environmental engineering is concerned with protecting human, animal, and plant populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors, including toxic chemicals and wastes, pathogenic bacteria, and global warming

Our graduates are not only capable of environmental auditing and making impact assessments of humans on the natural environment; they are also trained to  possess the scientific, mathematical and technical knowledge to identify, design, build, and operate innovative and improved systems to protect and clean up the environment. They are capable of engineering systems to: provide safe drinking water; treat and properly dispose of wastes; maintain air quality; control water pollution; reclaim mining sites after closure; remediate sites contaminated due to spills or improper disposal of hazardous substances, etc, etc.

Our graduates are trained in traditional engineering components such as mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and engineering design. However, environmental engineering education and practice also involves a range of other disciplines such as biology, microbiology, ecology, public health, geology, meteorology, economics and political science, producing a well rounded, multidisciplinary professional who can contribute meaningfully to a wide range of sectors.

The programme of study comprises six semesters of full time studies at the university and one year of industrial attachment.


Career Opportunities


The breadth of an environmental engineering education prepares the student to follow many career paths, including entrepreneurship. Environmental Engineers can pursue careers with many different industries, such as chemical, pharmaceutical and manufacturing, in groundwater and hazardous waste remediation, in municipal engineering, in air pollution abatement and control, and in mining. Some also join environmental consulting firms which serve several engineering areas and non-profits which advance the agenda for environmental protection. In addition, some students go on to continue their education in graduate school. 

Specializations include but are not limited to: Pollutant fate and transport, water resources engineering and management, environmental chemistry, geomorphology and geohydrology, drinking water and wastewater treatment, environmental microbiology, ecosystem dynamics, solid waste management, sanitation,  sustainable urban landscapes, environmentally responsible design and manufacturing, river and floodplain hydraulics, modelling and analysis of public policy, energy distribution and markets, simulation of market responses to environmental policies, environmental justice and ethics, eco-technologies, and integrated assessment of climate policy and impacts.

Admissions

For normal entry the candidates must have Advanced Level passes in Mathematics, Physics and any other Science subject such as Chemistry, Biology, Computing or Technical Drawing. In addition, candidates must have passed at least 5 subjects including Mathematics and English Language at General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level.

For special entry, candidates must hold at least a National Diploma in an approved Engineering field or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution. In addition, candidates must have passed at least 5 subjects, including Mathematics and English Language, at General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level. Candidates may be required to sit for an entrance examination.
