Prof. Innocent Nhapi

Prof. Innocent Nhapi is an expert in sanitary and environmental engineering. He joined the Department of Environmental Engineering at CUT in January 2014 as a Full Professor. He holds a BTech (Civil Eng) degree and a Post-graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management from the University of Zimbabwe, an MEng in Water Engineering from the University of Technology Sydney (Australia), and a Diploma in Business Administration Part III from the

Zimbabwe Institute of Management. He did his PhD in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering with UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands. He is a registered Professional Engineering with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe and is a corporate member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and the Zimbabwe Institution of Management. He is also a Member of the International Water Association and the American Chemical Society.

Prof. Nhapi worked for Redcliff Municipality for nearly 10 years before joining the University of Zimbabwe from 1999 to April 2005. At the University of Zimbabwe he was also involved in the running of two masters programmes in water and was attached to the WaterNet Project (regional capacity building project in Southern Africa) at various times in 2004 to 2005.  In 2005 he briefly worked for the National Community Water and Sanitation Training Institute (NCWSTI) in South Africa as a Senior Manager, Higher Education and Training. At NCWSTI, he was involved in the formulation of post-graduate courses and the running of a BSc programme in Community Water Supply and Sanitation, plus other research and training programmes of the Institute. From October 2005 to October 2008, Prof. Nhapi was with the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education of Delft, The Netherlands, as a Project Manager on an NPT-funded capacity building project on Water Resources and Environmental Management (WREM) at the National University of Rwanda. Whilst in Rwanda, Prof. Nhapi also trained and assisted in the development of environmental impact assessment systems. He was involved in the revalidation process for the teaching programmes in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the National University of Rwanda. He has supervised more than 40 MSc students and involved in the start up of 6 PhD students in Rwanda and is current co-supervising 3 PhD and 2 MPhil students. Prof. Nhapi has written about 60 journal articles and has also reviewed several papers and research reports and has been an editor/co-editor of a regular special issue of the Elsevier Physics and Chemistry of the Earth journal and an editorial board member of the Reviews in Environmental Science and Bio/Technology journal. After leaving Rwanda he carried out an external evaluation of the Nile Basin Capacity Building Network for Cap-Net.

Prof. Nhapi has worked as an Interim Manager for WaterNet from March to August 2009 before joining the University of Zimbabwe under the SADC-WaterNet Professorial Chair in Integrated Water Resources Management from September 2009 to February 2013. He has done consultancy work on water sector reforms in Zimbabwe for UNICEF and the World Bank. He was one of the consultants who developed the background papers for the new national water policy on Zimbabwe in 2012. He also worked on two World Bank-funded consultancy projects on service level benchmarking for water supply, sanitation and solid waste management services for 32 urban councils in Zimbabwe, and the formulation of the Greater Harare sanitation strategy. Currently he is part of the team writing the Zimbabwe State of the Environment and Outlook report and is also working with GWP-SA Capacity Development Team on Climate Change Adaptation training and mentoring of government officials. His main research interests include water supply and sanitation, water quality management, institutional aspects of water and local authority management, climate change, and waste recovery and reuse.
